So, what’s this thing all about, anyway/who’s running this?


Glad you asked. To sum up, this contest is being run by me, , and it’s to draw art of my original characters, using the theme of duality. How can that be depicted? Plenty of ways. Just use your imagination!

Why is the theme being called 'duality'?

In the world I've created, there exists a clan who is run by a holy messenger of their gods called the Oracle. Always, the Oracle has a caretaker (someone in their family, usually) who is meant to care for that person for life. In exchange for a strong soul and the gift of communication with the gods, the Oracle has a weak body and a short life span. Because most caretakers are with their charges from the time they're children, it's normal for a caretaker and an Oracle to have a strong paternal/sibling bond. However, there are also many cases where the Oracle and caretaker are connected by their very souls as well. In olden times, it was often said that the Oracle and their caretaker were more like one soul sharing two bodies; whatever affected one affected the other. Hence, the theme.

All right, so how long have I got to get this done?

The contest will be running from February 7th through August 10th, 2008. So, that should give you over six months total to come up with something. Entries will be accepted until midnight of May 9th to allow people in different time zones to catch up.

I don’t work for free, I’m a busy person!

Rest assured, I understand that a lot of folks around here use their art as a serious form of revenue and would like exposure for their work. That’s why prizes worth money will be offered to two winners and an honorable mention.

Okay, so what are these prizes?

The list is as follows:

1st place winner: Full color picture drawn by , and a print of $40 USD value from the dA print shop, OR a 5,000 word short story by me featuring original characters of their choice (since I can’t do both the print and the story thanks to time/money constraints.Besides, two prizes is a lot, right? ).

2nd place winner:Greyscale picture drawn by , and a print of $20 USD value from the dA print shop, OR a 3,000 word short story by me featuring original characters of their choice.

Honorable mention: Lineart drawing by , and a print of $10 USD value from the dA print shop, OR a 2,000 word short story by me featuring original characters of their choice.

What mediums can I use, then?

Anything you like. Paints, pencils, flash animation, CG, traditional, even sculpture. Be creative and have a good time with it.

How do I send my entry to you?

Simple. Put it in your gallery and then note me the link.

I went over the information you provided and would like to do a character not mentioned in the profiles but in the snippets you provided. May I?

Sure thing, just note me telling me who you want to do. I’ll do my best to provide information and story stuff if you need it.

I need more information about a character than what you’ve given here.

Please note me and tell me what you need. I’ll be happy to try and accommodate you.

Some characters don’t have pictures to go along with their profiles but I would like to draw them.

All the better. Since the character designs aren’t set in stone for those, feel free to draw them as you envision them. This is all about creative interpretation, after all.

Is there anything you don’t want to have drawn?

I fancy myself a pretty open-minded person for the most part, so you’d really have to horrify me for me to get on your case about that. However, I ask that you please stay along PG-13 guidelines and keep the characters in-character. If you have any doubts or further questions, please note me and run your idea past me. I’m a little more tolerant towards violence than I am blatant graphic sexual content, so nothing graphic in the latter category, please.

Your entry can be as silly or as serious as you like.

My entry is pretty bloody/graphic. I’m not sure if it’ll stay within PG-13 guidelines or not.

Please note me and if you have a preview that’s not up in your gallery yet, send a link to that along with the note. If worst comes to worst, put a mature rating on it. It’s only fair to warn other people, after all.

I’m not really coming up with any ideas for the theme. Is there something else I can do?

Alternatively, if you’re really having a hard time with the theme provided, you can take the easier route by drawing a scene out of one of the story snippets. Heck, you can even use the teaser provided in the character profiles if you like. All I ask is that you do your best.

Are you looking for judges?

Not at the moment, but I’ll be sure to make a journal entry if I am.

Is there anything else I can do even if I'm not entering?
